TOWARDS MULTIPLE PHILOSOPHIES OF MUSIC EDUCATION
The New Lexicon seeks neither one authoritative philosophy of music education nor a predetermined future for the field. The field must remain responsive to differences in tradition, institution, culture, purpose, and community. Its concepts must be precise without claiming universality, revisable without losing force, and attentive to both singular encounters and their structures.
The programme establishes conditions from which multiple philosophies of music education may emerge: philosophies generated through practice, sharpened through critique, tested through dialogue, and revised through encounter. Such philosophies may disagree about the nature of music, the purpose of education, the location of authority, the status of knowledge, the meaning of inclusion, or the criteria of value. Their importance need not lie in convergence, but in their capacity to clarify what is at stake and renew the language through which music education understands its responsibilities.
To develop a new lexicon is to make new distinctions and become more accountable for those already in use. It is to ask what our concepts allow us to hear in learners, teachers, institutions, and musical practices; what they prevent us from hearing; and how educational encounters might transform the terms through which they become intelligible. The residency begins from this task and invites music educators to undertake it collectively.
